CP&A celebrates #GLAD24

Richie Phillips, mechanical engineer, Casper Phillips & Associates (CP&A) is supporting #GLAD24 to promote everything it does within lifting and all the important aspects that go on behind the scenes in the lifting industry.

“At Casper Phillips & Associates we're crane design engineers among other things. And we do a lot of work in both the aerospace and the container handling community and other port equipment. We think lifting has a big impact on the rest of the world and helps to keep the supply chain moving,” said Phillips.

“We're based out of the USA in the Greater Seattle area within driving distance of the Port of Seattle, Port of Tacoma and the Port of Portland.

“For us GLAD is a celebration of everything all the different companies do. As engineers we are just one part of the equation so it's nice to see some of the other things other contributors do, whether it's a crane operator, a manufacturer or even how media are helping us to promote the event.

“A lot of the work we do goes on behind the scenes and despite news about supply chain shortages the cranes are doing a lot of lifting, especially in the ports for global trade. Actually, it was reported in 1956 that container cranes helped to lower the cost of imports from about 648 to 16 cents a pound. A reduction of about 3% of the price when container transfers were first invented. A remarkable revolution which led to the globalisation that we see today.

“Today it's estimated about 90% of the global trade transported is transported across oceans. But of course that's more than just containerized trade. It also includes bulk handling, roll on, roll off, and even the cranes themselves. So quite a big chunk of the supply chain goes through the ports.

“Even the work we do in aerospace industry, there's a lot of very sensitive parts that need to be moved along and carried throughout the factory and they need to be controlled very carefully. We've designed lifting applications for all kinds of things in the aerospace sector.

“On the day itself (July 28) we're going to be posting and celebrating some of our achievements over social media with the #GLAD hashtag and following what other companies are posting. It’s also a good way to attract the younger generation to show them the breadth of what the industry has to offer, because sometimes when people think of cranes, they just think of one type of crane. But they don't realise its inside a lot of factories, even assembly plants helping people be able to build big assemblies from ships to cranes, aeroplanes everything.”
