LiftEx 2024: Franklin Offshore Europe

As part of LEEA’s Be my Guest series, Jenny Eagle, reporter for LEEA chats to exhibitor Hans Coenen, operations manager, Franklin Offshore Europe at LiftEx 2024, London Olympia (October 16,17).

One of the features on display was the announcement that Franklin Offshore International (Singapore) made the world’s longest grommet sling measuring 110m (360.8 ft) long, with a diameter of 19 mm (7.55 in), constructed in June 2003 and with a calculated grommet breaking load of 3,070 tons.

“Franklin Offshore consists of 13 entities worldwide, and I am a proud member of them in the Netherlands. What we are actually doing is making big size cabling slings, grommet slings for the big offshore contractors in Holland and in Europe,” he said.

“We have been visiting LEEA LiftEx for about three years now and always have a very productive time. People involved in the industry know one other and are willing to share information to deepen their knowledge, see improvements made across the sector and gain a better understanding of the industry.”

Franklin Offshore supplies all types of rigging equipment that includes slings, shackles, rigging blocks, mechanical lifting machines, and chain and fittings, DNV 2.7-1 Type approved slings, and heavy lift cable laid and Flemish-Lock slings in compliance with BE/EN and IMCA M 179 requirements.

Coenen invited guests to see its Merlion cable-laid slings, a wire rope assembly consisting of steel wire rope strands which are helically twisted around a steel core wire.

A cable-laid grommet is a sling in the form of a continuous/endless loop. Grommets consists of six wire rope strands twisted around a core wire. Unlike a cable-laid rope, a grommet is produced from one single length of steel wire rope. The ends of the wire rope are tucked into the grommet through a splicing process to form the core.
