LEEA training provides a deeper understanding that boosts careers
Majd Dayoub is building his future in the Lifting Industry with the help of winning the 2024 Cyril McCaully Memorial Prize for LEEA’s Offshore Containers course. Over four days, this instructor-led this course, also available on Zoom, helps to create expertise by covering vital areas such as testing, inspection, examination and maintenance of offshore containers.
“LEEA is the most recognised association in the Lifting Industry worldwide,” says Majd Dayoub, a Lifting Engineer working for Aberdeen Technical Services (Iraq), who won the Cyril McCaully Memorial Prize for the Offshore Containers course in 2024. This diploma qualification is essential for anyone engaged in the testing, inspection, examination and repair or maintenance of offshore containers.
“The course and training have provided me with a deeper understanding of lifting equipment, related standards and best practices, enhancing my skills and confidence in the field, which has directly supported my job performance and career growth.”
Majd is also the proud holder of the LEEA Foundation and the Lifting Equipment General diploma – both gained in 2021 – and the Mobile Crane Examination diploma passed in 2022. In addition, he has taken LEEA-accredited courses (Lifting Supervisor and Appointed Person for Lifting Operations).
“As a Lifting Engineer, my job includes inspecting lifting equipment, planning and supervising lifting operations, providing training and providing lifting-related technical solutions to our clients. I always referred to LEEA’s COPSULE while working with lifting equipment, as it provided well-structured and valuable information. This motivated me to pursue LEEA courses, further encouraged by friends who had previously completed them.”
As for future career ambitions and how LEEA courses will help Majd, he says: “My goal is to enhance my knowledge and expertise in the Lifting Industry. I’m currently preparing to take the Manual and Powered Lifting Machines Diplomas (LEEA MLM and PLM).”
Majd has a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (Major: Metals Engineering) and a Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering. It was while working in various industrial sectors that Majd encountered the Lifting Industry. “I’d previously worked as a production engineer in steel and aluminium plants and an NDT inspector. I frequently dealt with various lifting equipment. This interaction with different types, designs, uses and associated risks sparked my interest and drew me into Lifting. Later, I focused my career into the Lifting Industry in the fields of inspection, planning and supervision.”
Lifting careers, building futures
On 12 June 2025, Global Lifting Awareness Day (GLAD) provides a launchpad to inspire the next generation to explore careers in lifting. This year, with the theme of ‘lifting careers, building futures’, the annual celebration of the Lifting Industry is dedicated to tackling the growing skills shortage and promoting practical tools to attract new talent. Training is a vital part of developing the skills that enable people to progress their careers.
To those considering their future career, Majd advises: “The lifting industry is an open book: the more you learn, the more you realise there’s still so much to discover – from the various lifting equipment and their various methods of use, to the various methods inspection; from the simple to the highly complicated lifting operations, with its challenges, innovative solutions, and hazard management. It’s an exciting career path for those seeking new challenges and continuous growth.”
He adds: “The lifting industry offers continuous challenges and opportunities for growth. I recommend anyone interested in this field to pursue LEEA courses and LEEA-Accredited courses for comprehensive training.”
