Ferryl turns to LiftEx to break into the lifting industry

Ferryl exhibited at LiftEx for the first time last year, as it looks to expand its products and services into the lifting equipment and engineering sector.

The company, founded by Sten-Eskil in Sweden in 1955, specialises in wire rope maintenance and is well known in the shipping industry, creating products for unique conditions at sea.

Chris Rigopoulos, Global Sales Executive, Ferryl Sales, based in Greece, exhibited at LEEA’s Liverpool event in November in the Chains, Ropes & Accessories category, alongside Bridon Bekaert, Codipro, European Management & Marine (EMM Corp), Hendrik Veder Group, Latch and Batchelor, Lift Turn Move, Lift-Tex Heavy Lift Slings, RUD Chains, Sahm Splice, Talurit and William Hackett Chains.

“Ferryl has been in the wire rope maintenance industry since 1955 and we decided to join LiftEx as it was a good opportunity for us to test the market to see if we can expand into the lifting sector,” said Rigopoulos.

“We are currently looking for new business partners to actively promote, market and sell Ferryl products across many markets worldwide.”

He said Ferryl Anticorrosive Products, with a range of greases and oils, coatings and maintenance products, are specially designed for niche area deck applications onboard ships and can improve function, safety and appearance, through rust protection, lubrication and maintenance.

Today Ferryl has an international supply network, managed from the Isle of Man and all its brands are manufactured at Ferryl Deutschland , a purpose-built centre for research, production and warehousing in Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany.

“Our main sector is the marine industry but we wanted to speak to visitors attending LiftEx to get a feel for the market and see how our products would be received. The main challenge for us is to expand our wire rope maintenance products into a new sector, and we got some great feedback at the event,” added Rigopoulos.

He said proper maintenance of wires at sea is critical. Hot temperatures cause grease to drip and sea water washes it off, leaving wires exposed and can penetrate into the wire core, where it causes a lot of damage including rust.

Wire lubrication is also important. Abrasion and wear occur internally between wire strands, and when the wire runs through sheaves or onto winches, which can also cause premature wire rope failure if the grease being used is not of a sufficient quality or if there is not enough grease in place.

To ensure wires are in optimal condition, wires need cleaning, internal protection and external protection. This can be done manually; Ferryl Rustoil Penetrating Oil cleans off old grease and contaminants while removing moisture from the core; Ferryl 101 Anticorrosive Oil provides rust protection and lubrication in the wire core; followed by an application of Ferryl 202 Standard Anticorrosive Grease for external protection.

As an alternative, these three steps can also be done in one using Ferryl Qire Rope Lubricator, a semi-automatic wire rope greasing machine, where grease is pumped at up to 400 bar into the high-pressure lubricating chamber as the wire passes through. The pressure forces the grease into the wire core, forcing out water and moisture.

Properly maintained wires mean a safer working environment onboard, extended wire life and reducing cost.
