Enhanced career prospects with LEEA training

Having won the Cyril McCaully Memorial Prize for LEEA’s Powered Lifting Machines course in 2024, Vishnu S Kumar is building his future in the Lifting Industry.

In addition to gaining the Powered Machines diploma in October 2024, for which he won the Cyril McCaully Memorial Prize, Vishnu S Kumar, a Lifting Gear Inspector at Tubestar Oil and Gas Pvt Ltd, also has the Foundation course, which he passed in December 2021 and the Lifting Equipment General diploma, gained in March 2022.

Explaining the value of these qualifications, Vishnu says: “LEEA is a globally recognised certification and LEEA training can significantly improve career prospects, open up new opportunities and provide a competitive edge in the lifting equipment industry. Certified professionals can command higher salaries and benefits and move into leadership roles, overseeing teams or projects within the lifting industry. Many companies require employees to hold LEEA certifications to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.”

He adds: “LEEA training provides in-depth knowledge of lifting equipment, inspection and maintenance. Certified professionals can identify and mitigate risks, improving safety in the workplace. LEEA certification can boost confidence and self-esteem, enabling professionals to take on new challenges.”

Pursuing LEEA certifications has fulfilled Vishnu’s aims, which were: “To enhance expertise and career prospects, become familiar with technologies that are increasingly used in the Lifting Industry, move into a management role, take on leadership responsibilities, oversee teams or projects within the Lifting Industry and become a recognised industry expert.”

When Vishnu commenced his career in 2017 as an NDT inspector at Tubestar Oil and Gas, it was just the beginning of his career progression. After taking a LEEA Foundation course in 2021, Vishnu gained promotion to his current role of Lifting Gear Inspector. “We conduct lifting gear inspection at oil and gas sector facilities – both onshore and offshore. I perform a lifting gear survey of full onshore/offshore rigs. including deficiencies on rig and load testing of lifting equipment.”

It was his first encounter with lifting, as Vishnu explains he came to know about the Industry through his current firm. He says: “The Lifting Industry is essential to various sectors – including construction, manufacturing and logistics – ensuring a stable demand for skilled professionals. It offers diverse roles, from inspection and maintenance to operations and management.”

Prior to joining Tubestar, Vishnu had worked as a production engineer apprentice in tractor manufacturing company Tractors & Farm Equipment's (TAFE) following graduation with a Bachelor of Engineering in electrical and electronics. Now, working in lifting, he is on the path leading to a fulfilling career.

Using his experience, Vishnu offers the following advice for somebody considering the Lifting Industry as a career: “Learn about the Lifting Industry, its various sectors and the roles within. Consider your skills, experience and interests to determine which area of the industry aligns best with you. The industry offers a wide range of exciting and challenging roles. New technologies, innovations, and safety standards are constantly emerging, providing opportunities for growth and development. With a strong demand for skilled professionals, you can enjoy job security and stability, as well as opportunities for career advancement.
