Connect with the Australian Lifting Sector at LiftEx Gold Coast

LiftEx Gold Coast takes place on 12-13th September 2024 at the Event Centre, Star Hotel on Australia's Gold Coast. The essential two-day exhibition and conference brings together lifting and height safety equipment suppliers with end-users engaged in operating, inspecting, and testing lifting equipment in Mining, Oil & Gas, Infrastructure, Construction, Ports & Marine, and Renewable Energy.

LiftEx Gold Coast is completely free to attend, which also includes coffee breaks, lunch and drinks and canapés at the Drinks Reception. This makes it the ideal event for networking, connecting and engaging with the Australian Lifting Sector, as well as enhancing safe lifting practice. To attend, register at events.leeaint.com/liftex-gold-coast.

Speaker sessions

LiftEx has scheduled a programme of informative speaker sessions covering both days of the event. There will be expert insights on matters such as the development of AS4991 – Lifting Devices, with expert opinion on how to better develop this ‘catch-all’ standard, which is a longstanding topic of contention. There will be an opportunity to gain practical tools for manufacturing companies to increase diversity in their workplace and remain competitive and become market leaders.

After a welcome from Justin Boehm, LEEA’s Regional Manager – Australia & New Zealand, the speaker sessions will commence with Teagan Dowler from the Queensland Government’s Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water presenting on ‘Women in Industry’. Tower Crane Training is next on the agenda with Warwick Bright looking at ‘Pre-Use Inspections for Riggers and Dogmen’.  This free training session, offered through LEEA’s Licensed Training Centre, is valued at over $600.

In ‘The Queensland Government Code of Practice’ session, Stuart Davies of the Government’s Office of Industrial Relations, will explain how it is investigating ways to better protect workers by implementing a possible change to the way concrete panels are lifted. Delegates will hear about these changes and the implications for the Lifting Industry. Day one’s programme will be concluded with a panel session on ‘Standards development and industry issues’ featuring Justin Boehm, Ashlea Johnson of Bunzl Safety and Stuart Edwards of Edwards Heavy Lift.

Day two of the speaker session commences with a panel discussing the LEEA Military Training Scheme launch. The MTS will connect skilled and experienced individuals transitioning from the armed forces into civilian life and potential employment in the lifting industry.

This launch will be followed by a briefing from Matt Barber, Director of Membership at LEEA, on the Association’s programme updates and developments, which will change the face of service delivery in the region.

Next comes a session titled: ‘NOPSEMA – Safer and more sustainable Offshore Operations’. The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and environmental integrity of offshore energy projects. As the Australian offshore wind sector gains momentum, NOPSEMA will provide critical insights into safer and more sustainable offshore operations.

The speaker sessions will culminate with a thought provoking presentation on the ‘Beaconsfield mining disaster – 18 years on, what have we learned?’ It will be delivered by Brant Webb, one of two miners who survived the tragic collapse at the Beaconsfield gold mine in 2006. His story of survival and resilience is nothing short of extraordinary. Brant and fellow miner Todd Russell were trapped 1 kilometre below the surface for two weeks, after the mine collapsed killed a third miner, Larry Knight. Their condition was unknown for a full 5 days before rescuers found them alive. Brant’s experience has given him a unique perspective on safety, resilience, and the human capacity to endure. His story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety protocols and procedures in high-risk environments.
