LEEA has signed an MOU with the Crane Association of New Zealand and is hosting a member’s event in Sydney, in May 2025, showcasing the latest technologies.

It recently finished drafting the Australian Standard (AS) 1353 - flat woven webbing slings, which will be going to public comment in the coming weeks and is seeking member feedback on this revised standard. Here to tell us more is Justin Boehm, regional manager, LEEA Australia New Zealand council.

“Last week we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Crane Association of New Zealand to work closer together and to work on some important strategic documents for the New Zealand Government around their approved code of practice. At LEEA we have a whole new program for our licensed training partners scheme, and we are hoping to work again with the Crane Association to promote the training side of things and to ensure a large organization like The Crane Association New Zealand knows more about LEEA and Global Lifting Awareness Day,” said Boehm.

“I’ve been working with the association for a number of years. So, this MoU was just a matter of formalizing that agreement. Also, we've had some new directors come onboard with LEEA in the last few months and that gave us the impetus to better connect with our local stakeholders.”

LEEA ANZ held a successful LiftEx 2024 Gold Coast in September, and thanks to that and the positive feedback it received the council is organising an exclusive member event in Sydney in May 2025.

“LiftEx Gold Coas was a fantastic event. We had more than 300 people through the door, with some great exhibitors and fantastic speakers. So next year we're going back to a smaller member exclusive type event focused on technology. There are some really interesting things happening within our industry that maybe not all our members are aware of. Day one is going to be technical talks. There are some exciting opportunities around technology, especially within Augmented Reality which is something that has sprung to the fore in the last couple of month. So we have a discussion on that. Then on the second day the doors will be open to the wider industry so anyone's who’s interested in coming along is more than welcome,” said Boehm.

“Another interesting development is that we're looking to hold LiftEx 2026 in Melbourne, and the ANZ Regional Council has been revising the Australian Standard (AS) 1353 on flat woven webbing slings. We're now ready to go to public comment on that.

Before, it was an old two-part standard which, was written way back in the day when everything was on paper but now it’s been revised and sharpened up. So, it's going to be much easier for people to understand. Hopefully that will be ready in the New Year.

“2024 was a massive year, but 2025 is shaping up to be just as big. The best part about LEEA is we're growing all the time and doing some exciting things and that’s great to be a part of. It's a very exciting time for us and the association.”
