Babcock Chair Ruth Cairnie honoured
Ruth Cairnie, Chair of LEEA member, Babcock International, has been named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2025 New Year’s Honours list for her significant contributions to industry. Cairnie, who became the first female Chair in Babcock’s 130-year history, has been recognised for her leadership and transformative role at the company, as well as her wider impact in the UK defence sector.
Since taking the helm in 2019, Cairnie has overseen Babcock’s stabilisation, delivering steady growth, a reduction in debt, and a strengthened financial position. Her leadership has focused on modernising the company’s board processes and advancing sustainability initiatives. She has also been instrumental in positioning Babcock as a key player in national security, particularly through its operation of Skynet, the Ministry of Defence’s satellite communications system.
In addition to her work at Babcock, Cairnie has contributed to various industry and charitable organisations. She served as Chair of POWERful Women from 2015 to 2022, is a trustee of the White Ensign Association, and holds roles with the UK Women in Defence Charter and Windsor Leadership. In 2023, she was appointed Chair of the Remuneration Committee at BT. She also contributed as a Commissioner on the Covid Recovery Commission.
Upon receiving the honour, Cairnie expressed her pride in the recognition and her commitment to promoting diversity in business. “I believe strongly that the UK benefits greatly from having leading sovereign companies, and I am privileged to serve as Chair of Babcock, supporting the team in delivering a critical reset,” she said. “I am encouraged by the growing representation of women in sectors like Defence and Energy, and I’m deeply honoured by this recognition.”
The New Year’s Honours list celebrates the achievements and contributions of individuals across the UK, and Cairnie’s Damehood marks a significant milestone in her distinguished career.
