LEEA joins the Step Change in Safety 2019 Lifting Forums

LEEA has been kindly invited to attend Step Change in Safety’s Lifting Forum, which meets four times a year in Aberdeen.

Step Change in Safety is a UK, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to making the UK the safest oil province in the world in which to work. The member-led organisation brings together operators and contractors, trade unions, regulators and the workforce to continuously improve the safety of the North Sea.

To further benefit of the Oil Industry in the UK, LEEA contacted Step Change at the end of 2018 with an offer for both parties to work closely together, particularly in matters related to lifting equipment and its use. The offer was accepted gratefully.

LEEA will have a representative at each forum during 2019, which will be held on:

  • 20 March
  • 12 June
  • 11 September
  • 20 November

The first forum will take place between 9am-12pm on 20 March at The Exchange 2, 62 Market Street, Aberdeen AB11 5PJ. The main theme will be: ‘Major Hazard Understanding related to Lifting’. There will be a presentation from a member of Step Change’s Human Factors Workgroup, and the forum also will look at the newly updated Mechanical Lifting & Lifting Guidelines.

A forum on 12 June will focus on ‘Industry Sharing and Learning’, with industry presentations and case studies offering mutual learning. The forum taking place on 11 Septemberwill focus again on ‘Major Hazard Understanding’ and will examine ‘Decommissioning’. The final Lifting Forum for 2019 will discuss the update to review of ‘Handling Tubulars’ and will also review the year overall.

Dr Ross Moloney, CEO of LEEA comments: “LEEA looks forward to sharing our knowledge to all those attending the Step Change in Safety’s Lifting Forum. Oil price swings can significantly impact on companies operating in the sector, and when oil prices are low safety practices can come under pressure. With lifting operations playing a crucial role in the sector and being a significant contributor to health and safety risk, there is a clear fit for LEEA to collaborate with Step Change to promote safety. Using a rigorously audited LEEA member for lifting equipment services is significant step for companies in the Oil Sector seeking to avoid having to deal with the Health Safety Executive.”
