Europa Engineering MD joins distinguished Trade Guild

Europa Engineering MD and LEEA member Ella Cheetham is delighted to announce she has joined The Company of Cutlers, in Hallamshire, as a Freeman.

The Cutlers’ Company was established by a parliamentary Act of Incorporation in 1624 and for almost 400 years seeks to maintain the standards and quality of Sheffield manufactured cutlery and steel products and to promote the name of Sheffield.

One of its patrons is Dame Julie Kenny, Master Cutler who is the guild’s second ever female master and is also Founding Chair of Trustees of Wentworth Woodhouse stately home near Rotherham. She received a damehood in the Queen's birthday honours in 2019 for her work on the restoration project of the Grade I-listed site.

Kenny is also Chair of Robson Handling Technology Limited, trading engineering company, Maltby Learning Trust, a multi-academy trust and Vice Chair and Trustee of the National Coal Mining Museum of England.

“As a manufacturer here in South Yorkshire it is essential to our and other local businesses' ability to survive and thrive, that organisations like The Cutlers’ Company exist and even more so that we are a part of it,” said Cheetham.

“It is a huge privilege for me to have been asked to join the guild, especially as a young person and even more so as a woman. This year is a significant year for me to join the company, as Dame Julie Kenny is only the second ever woman in 400 years to be Master Cutler.

“Across our region, the manufacturing sector and at The Cutlers’ Company there is a call for more women to be involved, so we can rebalance the gender gap and prove that this isn’t just a man’s world. I hope that, just like Dame Julie Kenny, I can support a movement that helps pave the way for more women to come into the manufacturing sector.”

The Master Cutler works with "people of influence" to support businesses in South Yorkshire and protects the name ‘Sheffield’, meaning anyone who wants to use the city's name when registering a company must get permission from the company. Members of the guild also carry out charity work.
